A Massive AI Data Centre
Is Coming To Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
EverWind announced Friday that around $10 billion in private investment is going into the project. The site would be leased to Anthropic, the company behind the AI program Claude.
It would start at 95 megawatts in 2027, then grow to as much as 420 megawatts. That's raising some pretty big questions about where all that power will come from and how much water the facility will need.
One of the protest organizers said some people in the area already have wells that dry up during the summer, and residents still don't have a clear picture of what this project could mean for their water, power or the environment.
Premier Tim Houston says Canada needs more secure data infrastructure and sees the project as a big opportunity for Nova Scotia.
EverWind says it could create up to 2,000 construction jobs, but once it's built, there are expected to be around 215 permanent jobs.
That's part of what protesters are questioning to. Is the long-term benefit worth the amount of power, water and land a project this size could potentially use?
Organizers say they're not done. A province-wide protest is being planned for November 7th.
